What Are Bioplastics?
Bioplastics are biodegradable and, in some cases, compostable plastics derived from renewable raw materials such as starch from corn, potato, tapioca, or other plants and vegetables, combined with biodegradable and conventional polymers, to create products that reduce the impact on the environment in absolute carbon footprint terms.
Traditional plastic bags and food containers require great amounts of energy and raw materials (natural gas, oil and coal) to produce and recycle. Incorporating biomass into plastics can greatly reduce the amount of oil used to make a product. 60-70% of the oil used to create a conventional plastic product is not needed in the Trellis Earth® equivalent product — because our products are mostly biomass from newly created carbon sources, as opposed to “ancient sunlight” (what oil is referred to since it can only be created over eons by the accumulated effects of sunlight being captured by plants).
